Plastic or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the preferred packaging choice for many beverage bottlers. PET is often also the most appropriate packaging for situations where glass is not an option. PET plastics are coded with the resin identification code ‘1’, usually located on the bottom of the container, meaning they are recyclable. Recycled PET can be used to manufacture new bottles, and a growing volume of PET bottles are made with recycled PET, often shortened to rPET. Most beverage producers and governments, through various initiatives, are striving to see a greater proportion of PET recycled. PET is BPA free. BPA stands for bisphenol A, an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s.
